IMPORTANT ACTION REQUIRED BY ALL BUSINESS OWNERS: Especially those currently paying wages to Directors, Employees and/or Associates, Directors fees and bonuses
PAYDAY SUPER REFORMS
We wish to inform you that the Government has recently finalised its Payday Super reforms. These reforms make significant changes to the way employers need to make compulsory super contributions for directors, employees and/or associates from 1 July 2026.
The key changes to take note of include the following:
- Compulsory contributions for most employees will need to be made within 7 business days of paying an employee’s wages (e.g., weekly, fortnightly or monthly), rather than quarterly.
- Increased penalties may apply if you do not comply with the new requirements (e.g., where you make late super contributions for employees).
- If you are using the small business superannuation clearing house to make super contributions, you will no longer be able to do this from 1 July 2026.
These changes will require you to update your existing payroll and contribution practices. We therefore recommend you monitor updates from your payroll software provider on what preparation is required before 1 July 2026, so that you are ready to comply when the new rules commence.
Having to make more frequent contributions may also impact your business’s cash flow. We therefore encourage you to review your existing budgeting processes early in order to avoid or mitigate cash flow pressures when the new rules take effect.
Stones Sharp also suggest employers start paying superannuation guarantee payments with your pay cycle from January 2026 in order to become accustomed to the new system.
Additionally employers may wish to revise their payroll cycle frequency particularly if it is currently a weekly or fortnightly cycle in order to minimise administration work.
We note that the following applies for super guarantee for super payable for 1 October 2025 – 30 June 2026:
- Quarter 01/10/2025 – 31/12/2025 payment due no later than 28/01/2026
- Quarter 01/01/2026 – 31/03/2026 payment due no later than 28/04/2026
- Quarter 01/04/2026 – 30/06/2026 payment due no later than 28/07/2026
- 01/07/2026 onwards payday super rules are applicable
Stones Sharp will be running a complimentary webinar on this topic with guest speaker and tax expert Peter Adams on Friday 13 March 2026 at 2pm to 3pm. For more information or to register your interest please email reception@stonessharp.com.au.
